About Us

By Invisible City

Invisible City is an online publication of the MFA in Writing Program at the University of San Francisco that publishes in the fall and spring. We seek work that encourages us to see the world from new perspectives and different angles, ones that we may not have previously considered or imagined. 

Editorial Board

Editor-in-Chief

Sara Fan has an MFA in poetry from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where she was the assistant managing editor for Ninth Letter. She has an MFA in creative nonfiction from the University of San Francisco.

Production & Design Editor

With two young children at home, Crystal Theresa Z. Ejanda has learned to hold edits and revisions in her head and to write in short-but-productive bursts. She is an MFA in Writing candidate at the University of San Francisco, where she also earned her BA in English/Writing and complete minors in psychology and fine arts. Her writing has appeared in New South, Still Standing Magazine, Haiku Journal, and The Huffington Post.

Poetry Editor

Daniel Callahan is a writer from Sacramento, California, currently studying poetry in the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of San Francisco. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of San Diego. When he’s not writing he enjoys surfing, reading, and his work as a data analyst. Daniel is also a production assistant for Invisible City.

Assistant Poetry Editor

Catherine Rashmi Karnitis is an MFA in Writing student at the University of San Francisco. She is working on her first collection of poetry. She holds an MA in History from the University of California, Berkeley and an MA in Art History from The Ohio State University. Catherine is also a production assistant for Invisible City.

Fiction Editor

Emily Hoang is a San Francisco native who is pursuing her MFA at the University of San Francisco. She is currently the fiction editor for Invisible City.

Assistant Fiction Editor

Raised in Dallas, Texas, Caroline Read attended the University of Texas in Austin where she graduated with a BA in Plan II Honors and minors in English and Creative Writing. In 2017, Read moved to Australia for two years where she traveled, bartended, waitressed, drove tractors on a farm, tried to surf, and met an amazing web of fascinating people. Currently, she is a first-year fiction student in the University of San Francisco’s MFA program. Caroline is also a production assistant for Invisible City.

Nonfiction Editor

Darci Flatley is a nonfiction writer from Florida. She works in nonprofit focused on youth development. She enjoys writing that is innovative and experimental. Darci is also a production assistant for Invisible City.

Faculty Advisor

Laleh Khadivi is the author of The Kurdish Trilogy which includes The Age of Orphans (2009), The Walking (2013), and A Good Country (2017). Her fiction and non-fiction have appeared in the LA Times, San Francisco Chronicle, VQR, and The Sun. She has worked as a documentary filmmaker since 2000 and her films have been screened in festivals and on various cable networks.
